WWDC live blogging: Apple launches MobileMe

Apple’s .Mac syncing service is now called MobileMe, and it stores your information up in the cloud. If you use a Mac, a PC or the iPhone, you can get your information no matter where you are. In addition, new web-based applications will be available at Me.com.

We can all get push email, contacts and calendars right to our device. It works over the air, wirelessly.

It’s like “[Microsoft] Exchange for the rest of us,” says Phil Schiller, Apple’s VP of Worldwide Marketing.

MobileMe works with all of the main Apple desktop applications: Mail, iCal, etc. It also works with Outlook on the PC. And now Apple has new AJAX web apps too. These work just like a desktop application — even drag-and-drop functionality and a photo application are available.

Apple’s online storage system iDisk now has a complete web interface as well.

During the demo, it was clear that the push and pull of information from the cloud will be very fast. The interface, as expected, is slick.

MobileMe will be available in early July. It will cost the same $99 a year as .Mac, but with 20 gigabytes of free storage. (.Mac offered 10 gigabytes with the $99 price).
