Along with his bombshell news that Andy Rubin would be stepping down as head of Android, Google CEO Larry Page also used today to talk about Android’s progress, saying the platform has seen more than 750 million total activations so far.
Page writes in an update today:
The pace of innovation has never been greater, and Android is the most used mobile operating system in the world: We have a global partnership of over 60 manufacturers; more than 750 million devices have been activated globally; and 25 billion apps have now been downloaded from Google Play. Pretty extraordinary progress for a decade’s work.
Android is by far the most popular smartphone operating system in the world, with many manufacturers releasing new smartphones all the time. Strategy Analytics recently estimated that of 700 million-plus smartphones sold in 2012, 68.4 percent of them ran Android while only 19.4 percent ran Apple’s iOS.

The next big release for Android phones is Samsung’s Galaxy S IV, which debuts tomorrow. Another major release is the HTC One, which has been announced but is not yet available for purchase in the U.S.
