Apple's Cook: iOS beats Android by pushing OS updates to all users

iOS 8 being shown off at Apple's WWDC keynote

Apple CEO Tim Cook came packing a lot of stats for the iOS part of the presentation here at WWDC.

The main point is that people are loving them some iOS in unprecedented numbers all over the world, and Android is a “hellstew” of malware.

Cook stressed that when Apple does an update to its mobile OS, it tries to get it out to as much of the user base as possible. Cook says that nine out of 10 Apple device owners now use the newest version (until today) of the OS, iOS 7.

He adds that 97 percent of iOS users are satisfied with the OS.

By contrast, Cook points out, only about one in 10 Android users are using the most current version of that OS, KitKat. More than a third of Android users are using an Android version from four years ago. This means that these users don’t get access to the latest apps, and, more important, the latest security updates, Cook says. He also claimed that 99 percent of mobile malware lives on Android.

Apple has now sold 800 million iOS devices, half a billion iPhones, 100 million iPod Touches, and 200 million iPads.

Cook says 130 million people who bought an iOS device during the past year were buying one for the first time.
