Are the new iPhones secretly waterproof? Two tests say: Possibly

While Apple has been careful not to make any claims, it appears the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus may be, at the very least, extremely water-resistant. And quite possibly waterproof.

It makes sense that Apple doesn’t discuss this feature, to avoid being legally responsible next time you drop your iPhone in the toilet because you were texting while, well, you know.

In any case, two gadget people who apparently have money to burn decided to take the plunge, so to speak, and see how the new devices would handle water.

Zach Straley, aka Zeedude, put each gadget in a bowl of water for an hour. Initial indications were that everything worked perfectly!

Two days later, he posted another video where he demonstrated that Touch ID, speakers and the charging port were working fine. There was a minor issue with the iPhone 6s: a barely noticeable diagonal line across the top of the screen.

Still, if you dropped your iPhone in the pool, you’d probably be thankful that was the only problem:

EverythingApplePro ran a similar test, and came up with slightly different results. In this case, these iPhones were placed in the water and taken out at different intervals up until about 30 minutes.

The first few times, they worked fine. By the last test, they were both dead:

If there’s a takeaway from this, of course it’s that you shouldn’t put them in water in the first place. Duh!

But if you do, chances seem good that if you grab them right out, and immediately put them in some rice or kitty litter just to be safe, then it’s quite likely they’ll be just fine.

But should you tuck them in your swimsuit and then dive into the pool? Probably not.
