Chromecast-supported apps for Redbox Instant & Vimeo are on the way

Google’s new streaming media stick, the Chromecast, isn’t even a week old, but already more companies are announcing support for the device.

Initially, Chromecast had support for two major streaming video networks: Netflix and Google-owned YouTube. However, both Vimeo and the Verizon-Outerwall joint venture Redbox Instant service are also planning to launch their own Chromecast apps, reports GigaOM. We’re reaching out to both companies to find out more details as well as when the Chromecast apps will launch, and we will update the post with anything we find out.

The report also points out that media platform Plex is also looking into providing a Chromecast app.

The news is hardly surprising, especially since Chromecast orders were so overwhelming that Google actually had to kill its free three-month Netflix service promotion. Streaming media services are obviously paying attention to the buzz and responding in kind. Chromecast itself is Google’s answer to Apple’s Apple TV, a low-priced streaming device that lets you sling what you’re watching on your mobile device to your television screen. It’s meant to enhance your mobile experience by adding a larger-screen option.

The greater question will be how long it takes to get the majority of streaming music services available on Chromecast. Google initially said Pandora access is in the pipeline, but plenty of people will also want access to services like Slacker Radio, Stitcher, Rdio, and many more. It might be a bit trickier to lure over the largest music service, Spotify, which requires its users to sign up for a premium subscription before gaining access to the service on other devices (such as smartphones, tablets, and Chromecast.)

Presently, Chromecast apps include Netflix, YouTube, Google Play Music, and Google Play Movies/TV. During the announcement, the company did say apps from Pandora, AOL, and Revision3 would be coming soon, too.
