Cisco buys Neohapsis to bolster its cloud and mobile security savvy

Cisco today announced that it has bought a cloud and mobile security company called Neohapsis, which has experience working with enterprises to make their applications more secure.

Neohapsis specializes in penetration testing, risk assessment for applications, networking infrastructure evaluations, and other services. After the deal closes, the Neohapsis team will join Cisco’s Security Services division.

The deal follows Cisco’s acquisition of security hardware and software provider Sourcefire last year.

“Together, Cisco, Neohapsis and our partner ecosystem will deliver comprehensive services to help our customers build the security capabilities required to remain secure and competitive in today’s markets,” Hilton Romanski, Cisco’s head of corporate development, wrote in a blog post on the news. “This will help our customers overcome operational and technical security vulnerabilities, achieve a comprehensive view of their risks, take advantage of new business models, and define structured approaches for better protection.”

Beyond that, the Internet of things (IoT) — a term to describe a wide network of Internet-connected devices — seems to be relevant to this acquisition.

“Because of Neohapsis’ and Cisco’s shared focus on the Internet of Everything, the opportunity to do groundbreaking work together is enormous,” Neohapsis chief executive James Mobley wrote in a blog post of his own. “Together, what we bring to enterprise customers, IoT device manufacturers, and associated service providers will be unique in the market.”

Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. Neohapsis started in 1997 and is based in Chicago. Cisco expects the acquisition to close in the second quarter of fiscal year 2015.
