Firefox 4.0 for iOS arrives with Today widget integration, Awesomebar, and printing support

Mozilla today released Firefox 4.0 for iOS. Notable additions to the browser include integration with the iOS Today widget, an Awesomebar that knows your bookmarks and history, and printing support. You can download the new version now directly from Apple’s App Store.

Mozilla doesn’t break out the exact numbers for Firefox, though the company does say “half a billion people around the world” use the browser. Firefox for iOS was released as a public preview in September 2015 and as a stable release in November 2015.

First up, Firefox 4.0 brings access to Mozilla’s browser through the iOS Today widget. You can now open a new tab, a new private tab, or a recently copied URL right from the widget.

Next, Mozilla has finally brought Firefox’s Awesomebar to iOS. As a result, you can now search your bookmarks and history right from the URL bar. Domain autocompletion has also been enabled.

Just like on other platforms, Firefox for iOS warns you when a website’s connection is not secure. Now, the iOS browser lets you temporarily ignore error messages about untrusted connections, so you can access sites that you consider to be safe.

Last but not least, Firefox for iOS now supports printing. Yes, there are still people out there who want to print websites.

Mozilla typically releases new Firefox versions every six to eight weeks, and we thus expect the next iOS version to arrive in June.
