LAS VEGAS — Tonino Lamborghini is a company that wants to sell you a $6,000 smartphone. There are only 1,947 of these limited edition 88 Tauri models available, which have side panels that open like real Lamborghini cars. The company is targeting the “techno-luxury” market, but I prefer to think of it as the “techno insane” market..

The number has to do with the birth year of the founder of the company, Tonino Lamborghini. It comes in black, gold, and steel silver, and it has high-quality leather in five different colors, with options for gold plating. And it runs the Android 4.4 “KitKat” mobile operating system — which was released over a year ago. (The most recent version is Android 5.0 “Lollipop.”)

We’re not quite sure if this is the most expensive smartphone in the world, but it has to be up there. This is one of the clear “bling” items on display at the 2015 International CES, the big tech trade show in Las Vegas. I saw it at the Digital Experience party at the Mirage hotel. The chassis is automotive-grade steel, and it comes in black, polished silver, and gold plating. It’s $6,500 if you want the gold plating.

The device has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core, 2.3-gigahertz processor and a scratch-proof Gorilla Glass screen. I held it in my hand and it was pretty heavy. The device has a 5-inch display and 64 gigabytes of internal memory. The device has an eight-megapixel camera, and 13 exclusive ringtones created by DJ Ravin.

This kind of phone is a lot more like jewelry than utility, and I supposed it makes sense viewed from the perspective of high-end fashion. But I still think it’s pretty crazy. You can buy it at Lamborghini.it.
