New iPad Smart Case finally covers the whole damn thing

No Apple accessory has annoyed me as much as the iPad Smart Cover, a $40 add-on that didn’t even protect the backside of the device. Today, Apple finally remedied the situation by offering the new iPad Smart Case.

The $50 case acts much like the Smart Cover in that it can wake the iPad on opening and put the device to sleep on closing, except this time it covers the whole thing. The Smart Case has a polyurethane design and comes in six sassy colors.

Apple quietly added the Smart Case to its online store today amid the hubbub of WWDC 2012, but it did not mention the accessory during its press conference. Perhaps because it’s a minor addition, or perhaps because the team is embarrassed that it took more than a year to launch an accessory.
