Microsoft releases new Windows 10 previews for PC and mobile on the same day for the first time

Microsoft today announced the release of a new Windows 10 preview build for PCs that are part of the fast ring of the Windows Insider Program. In addition to this new Build 14271, Microsoft is also rolling out Windows 10 Mobile Build 14267.1004 for insiders in the fast ring.

This release comes less than one week after the release of preview build 14267, which included Cortana, Edge, and Skype updates. (Also today, Microsoft said there’s a new software development kit for that Windows 10 preview build that appeared last week.)

In this case, the big news is inside of the mobile preview build.

“We’re introducing Visual Voicemail for dual-SIM devices such as dual-SIM Lumia 950 XL!” Gabe Aul, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s engineering systems team, wrote in a blog post. “Work for this feature was in Friday’s release but due to the above mentioned bug impacting notifications it was not working correctly. But now the experience should be working as expected.”

And the history part of the People app on Windows 10 Mobile is back in this preview.

The new PC build mainly contains bug fixes. For instance, “We fixed an issue where the taskbar would sometimes not auto-hide and show unexpectedly on top of full screen windows such as showing above a PowerPoint presentation when in slideshow mode,” Aul wrote. (Thank goodness.)

Also in the PC preview build, the Action Center has gotten two improvements. It’s now easier to dismiss all the notifications from an individual app there because Microsoft has made the “target area” the size of the whole app header. Plus, you can now right-click on all of the app header, not just the x or the name of the app.

And Microsoft has also fixed a bug that kept certain Win32 apps from appearing in the Start menu.

Windows 10 is now running on more than 200 million devices.

There are a few known issues in the new PC and mobile builds.

On the PC side, charts using D3.js aren’t working properly, and PCs can freeze after they’re woken up from hibernation. “Disabling hibernation is a workaround in some cases until this is fixed,” Aul wrote.

For mobile, the trackpad won’t work right with the Continuum mode on the Lumia 950 XL, and generally speaking, connecting to wireless displays might not be functioning correctly.

With the newest PC build, Microsoft is adjusting the way that people give feedback on builds.

“Starting with Build 14271 and newer, the frequency in which Windows will ask for your feedback will be locked to ‘Automatically (Recommended)’ in the Settings app and managed by the Windows Insider Program,” Aul wrote. “If having the ability to change this setting is important to you — you can roll back to the Windows 10 November Update (the latest build or future builds in our Current Branch) and disable Windows 10 Insider Preview builds on that device. You will then be able to change this setting.”
