Nokia reportedly launching Windows RT tablet next month — but why?

Finnish phone maker Nokia will launch its first Windows RT tablet in September, and alleged photos of the device have already leaked via a Chinese tech site called Digi-wo, The Verge reports.

But with Microsoft recently writing off $900 million due to losses from its Windows RT Surface tablets, and with other hardware partners abandoning RT, why is Nokia even trying to do its own RT tablet?

First, Nokia makes great hardware and we’ve seen some spectacular features on some of its recent phones. A Nokia tablet could be what it needs to show its hardware in a different light and show the world what it can do with tablets.

Second, Nokia has a deep relationship with Microsoft. If any manufacturer out there can find a way to make an RT tablet work, Nokia would be it. Nokia already makes the best and most flashy Windows Phones, so it might as well try to make a Windows RT tablet. (Personally, I’d prefer a Windows 8 tablet from Nokia instead.)

The device will reportedly include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 32GB of internal storage, a 10-inch 1080p screen, and a USB 3.0 port. And if the price is right, perhaps some folks will be willing to take a look.

An event to unveil the device is reportedly scheduled for Sept. 26 in New York City. If that does turn out to be the case, we will be on the scene to test out the new tablet and see how it compares to other similar offerings.
