Nuance buys Ditech Networks for $22.5M to bolster voice technology

With its purchase of Ditech Networks, Nuance aims to improve its own voice technologies.

Voice services provider Nuance announced today the big $22.5 million purchase of Ditech Networks, a creator of  voice processing technology.

The purchase gives Nuance access to Ditech’s stable of voice technologies, including its VoiceTag voicemail-to-text software and Voice Quality Assurance solution, which improves the quality of phone calls.

The buy also means that Nuance will get its hands on Ditech Network’s cadre of customers.

The purchase fits well within both Nuance’s consumer and enterprise-focused products. Improved voice processing means more accurate results, not only users of Nuance’s Dragon Drive platform but also for users of apps that use Nuance’s Nina voice assistant technology.

The directorial boards for both companies have already approved the deal, which is expected to close by the end of the year.

This has been a busy year for Nuance, which bought medical transcription company Transecend in March for $200 million. The purchase followed the 2011 acquisitions of rival Vlingo and software keyboard company Swype.
