Shazam Windows Phone

Music and TV show discovery service Shazam rolled out a new Windows Phone 8 app today, following its revamped iPad app last week.

The move comes as Shazam, one of the most popular apps on Apple iOS and Google Android, positions itself for greater growth and contemplates an initial public offering (IPO). The company recently named Rich Riley, a former top Yahoo executive, as its new CEO.

(Indeed, Shazam’s focus on “experience” is why we’ve invited Riley to speak at our MobileBeat event next month, which focuses on how to build a “winning mobile experience.”)

Shazam’s app will still allow you unlimited tagging of music and TV programs, but this version takes advantage of the Windows Phone platform. Like the iPad app, Shazam on Windows Phone allows you to see a map of what the most popular music is in different locations, and it updates every 30 minutes. You can also set this feature up as a live tile on the device as well as for tagging, too.

Shazam also allows you to integrate with Microsoft’s Xbox Music and Nokia Music digital stores to buy track that you tag from the Shazam app. For those who prefer Xbox Music to iTunes or Google Play, this is definitely a nice addition.

As for the design, Shazam on Windows Phone features larger album artwork and a crisper user interface. The app is available now for free via the Windows Phone app store.
