The concept behind Tap Tap Revenge was simple: It was basically the popular console music-based game Guitar Hero ported to the iPhone. At first it worked because it was a perfectly simple use of the iPhone’s touchscreen. It worked even better when it got real music. Now the game developer, Tapulous, is expanding it beyond rock music, into dance music with Tap Tap Dance. Guess what? It still works.
The game, which features tracks from Daft Punk, Moby, Basement Jaxx and The Chemical Brothers among others, also adds a visual experience. If you’re doing well and hitting the right notes, the background will turn into a psychedelic mess of colors that swirl. It’s like being at a rave except that you get to experience it from the comfort of your home without hundreds of people high on ecstasy around you. Well, presumably anyway.
Seriously though, the game is a lot of fun. While it adds new elements like “tap and hold” and “multi-tap,” the core of the gameplay experience hasn’t changed at all from Tap Tap Revenge, which was the most downloaded game of 2008 in the App Store. And it didn’t need to.
Now, if only I could get “Midnight Madness” by The Chemical Brothers out of my head.
