This fall, Californians can get licenses for their driverless cars

Self-driving cars are rolling one lane closer to a highway near you.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles intends to begin granting driver licenses for operating specific autonomous vehicles in September.

To get a license, the human “drivers” jetting around in their self-driving vehicles will need to pass a test created by the carmaker and vetted by the California DMV. That’ll include default driver training in addition to instructions for operating any whiz-bang autonomous car tech.

You’ll be able to apply for a license in July, although this is all a bit preemptive, since car manufacturers aren’t selling self-driving cars quite yet. But when that day comes, California will be ready with the paperwork.
