When Twitter introduced video recording to its Android and iOS apps earlier this year, many rejoiced — but many also complained that you couldn’t capture skits in landscape mode. Now, however, you can.

So-called “vertical video syndrome (VVS)” is the bane of the web for many people, with millions of clips permeating video portals with those horrible black bars down the side due to people recording videos on their phones in portrait. It looks fine when viewing on another phone, but not so great when watching on a laptop or TV.

With Twitter, users have so far only been able to shoot video in square format from within the app, which is fine for viewing on some platforms, but not so much others. Now that Twitter has added landscape video to the mix, many will be hoping that the company’s live video-streaming app, Periscope, will follow suit.

Periscope lets users broadcast events in real time to their followers, who can interact by commenting and sharing their appreciation with “hearts.” Twitter finally launched Periscope for Android just a couple of weeks back after a few months on iOS, but the app still doesn’t support landscape video, something that would improve the experience greatly for those watching a live stream from a computer.

With landscape video now in the main Twitter app, however, it’s good to know the company isn’t against the format.
