The A8 processor found inside the new iPhone 6 opens up a whole new world of possibilities for developers, including games with high-end 3D graphics that don’t drain the device’s battery.
But it also opens things up to 4K video rendering, which in layman’s terms means shooting ridiculously high-resolution films. While the latest iPhones have proven they’re capable of playing 4K video, Apple doesn’t specifically offer a 4K video-shooting feature, though third-party service Vizzywig4K arrived on the scene recently with a workaround that essentially stitches 24 high-res photos together to create videos. That now costs $50, down from a pretty incredible $1,000.
Now, however, Ultrakam is throwing its hat into the super high-quality video arena, with an update to its existing app that lets you capture video in 4K at 50MB/s using the MJPEG codec. It works with both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
This effectively offers around 400 percent more pixels than normal HD, and you can upload directly to YouTube from within the app or transfer to a computer to access and edit the files through a desktop app instead.

However, the app is also compatible with AirPlay and HDMI output, so you can ping videos to an external 4K TV or monitor easily without having to upload the video to another platform.
Ultrakam was one of the first apps to support 2K video shooting on the iPhone 5S and 5C, so it makes sense that it would push the technological capabilities of their successors to support an even higher quality production.
Though the app itself only costs $9.99, it’s also offered as part of a bundle with a secondary remote control app that lets you livestream the camera’s video to another screen across Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and control facets of the recording such as exposure and focus.
