Not to be outdone by its Twitter sibling Periscope, Vine on Thursday launched the ability for creators to remix sound from other videos. Available just for iOS users, you just record a vine as usual; in the screen where you add captions, edit the post, and more, there’ll be a soundwave icon at the bottom of the screen. Tap on that to open the soundboard, where you can incorporate audio from an existing library or record a new one.

Allowing sound to be remixed comes less than a year after Vine did the same thing with songs. Three months prior to that, the company added support for music.

This is the latest update for the short-form video social network, which has largely remained in the background of Twitter’s evolution towards live events. Reports earlier this year from Recode suggested that the division is struggling due to executive departures and the lack of attention paid by its parent. A Twitter spokesperson told the publication that Vine “is an important part of our strategy, particularly given its vibrant community of creators, and we’re excited about what the future holds with new leadership.”

There’s a battle for influencers and content creators among social networks, and Vine gives Twitter more ammunition in its war against YouTube, Facebook, and Snap. Beyond these new tools, Twitter provides ways to monetize vine videos, incorporating longer videos into their 6-second clips and basically turning vines into trailers for bigger stories. Oh, and let’s not forget that Vine has done away with the box ratio, like what Instagram did last year. Now your videos can be in landscape mode.

Vine could become a potential counter-agent against Instagram Stories and Snapchat. And with a focus on the here and now, providing more ways to be expressing that particular moment isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
