Instagram now lets you import previously shot videos, adds Android 4.0 support

About a month after Instagram added video in a clear response to Vine, the popular service is now one-upping Vine with the ability to import previously shot videos into the app.

Instagram added video in mid-June and was met with mixed reactions. But it appears the Facebook-owned service is serious about video and wants to make it easier to share videos across your network. So if you ever shoot a really amazing clip of a concert or other event and want to share it later on Instagram, you can do that now.

“Starting today you can upload videos from your phone’s media library and share those moments to Instagram regardless of when they were captured,” Instagram said in a blog post. “Once you select the video clip you’d like to import, you can trim it down to the exact part you like best. We’ve also made it so that you can choose how you square-crop your clip so you can keep the action front and center.”

Notably, video sharing competitor Vine, which is owned by Twitter, does not have the ability to import videos. But we bet that will come soon thanks to this announcement.

The new video importing addition can be found inside both the iPhone and Android Instagram apps, which have been updated today.

On top of video importing, Instagram outlined a few other new features. Owners of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) devices can now take and share videos on Instagram. The service says this has “been the Android community’s number-one request” since Instagram Video launched.

One more thing: Inside the iOS app, you’ll now have the option to automatically straighten a crooked photo. When you are applying effects, there is a new Straighten icon you can tap to enable it.
