An anonymous person on Reddit donated 14 million Dogecoins (the equivalent of $11,000) to a World Water Day fundraising campaign Saturday, marking the latest bit of social good associated with the cryptocurrency.
Dogecoin is a cryptocurrency similar to Bitcoin that started out as a joke based on a popular meme. Dogecoin are typically exchanged as a form of tipping for digital content as well as for charitable efforts such as the World Water Day campaign. The Dogecoin community also previously raised $25,000 to help send the Jamaican bobsled team to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
The person donating the large sum of money (which the Dogecoin Tipbot on Twitter verified) goes solely by the handle “Hood” or “savethemhood.” He previously stated that he wishes to take from the greedy and give to the poor, according to a previous Reddit post. However, he assured everyone that he obtained his latest donation by legal means, although that can’t really be verified beyond taking Hood at is word.
“Do not be concerned, friends. These are not stolen crypto,” Hood wrote on Reddit. “I convert the paper fiat of the wealthy into crypto for your [sic] to spread. Please help those in need.”
All donations from the Dogecoin community’s efforts will go toward bringing clean water to Kenyans through Charity:Water partner Action Against Hunger.
