Twitter is gearing up for what is perhaps one of the biggest live events in the world: the Summer Olympics. The company announced its plans ahead of the 2016 Games, which are starting this Friday in Rio de Janeiro. Perhaps most notable is that you will not only be able to follow country-specific Moments, but each live one will span the duration of the Olympics, a marked departure from Twitter’s default setting of a few hours or days.

Debuted in October, Twitter Moments are essentially summaries of events taking place around the world and are curated by Twitter’s editorial team. Each one is a collection of tweets, Vines, photos, and videos shared on the service and is designed to provide a holistic view of an event.

With live Olympic Moments, people in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Japan, the U.K., France, Germany, and the U.S. will be able to follow Moments specific to their country. Relevant tweets will be added into the timeline throughout the entirety of the event.

These dedicated Moments will be rolling out in the coming days.

This feature is part of Twitter’s effort to prove that it’s the platform for everything “live,” and making a good impression during the Olympics could help Twitter reinvigorate its base, while also showing potential users what it’s all about. During the company’s second quarter earnings, CEO Jack Dorsey announced that the efforts being made to improve Twitter’s products have had a beneficial impact, leading to a gain of 3 million new users.

To keep people abreast of the action, Twitter is also including an Olympics-related channel on Periscope and featuring relevant content within its Vine mobile app. If you double-tap a Vine from the Olympics account, you’ll notice Twitter has replaced the heart with an Olympic flame. And, of course, there are special celebratory emojis included, with trigger hashtags in English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and Arabic.

“Twitter’s activation of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will bring fans around the world together to see what’s happening with the teams before, during, and after the top athletes compete for glory,” said Twitter chief marketing officer Leslie Berland. “Twitter, Vine, and Periscope will offer fans inside access, commentary, highlights, and conversation throughout the Games and as the action unfolds.”

While Twitter is certainly gearing up for the Olympics, it’s not the only tech company out there trying to get your attention over the next couple of weeks. Amazon is touting the use of its Echo device to help you keep track of Olympic medal standings, overall sports results, and more, while Google has added Games-related features across its search engine, YouTube, and maps product.
