Her, a social network for lesbian and queer women, is opening its doors to the general public in the U.S. Starting today, women can install the company’s iOS app (Android is coming) and get connected with other women from throughout the country.
Backed by the startup accelerator Y Combinator, Her’s founder Robyn Exton says that the company has seen “unprecedented demand” for the app in the two months it has been on the market. Previously the app was only available in seven cities.
One tidbit Exton offered was that women were no longer seeking to apply labels to their sexuality, saying, “There is a large and growing number of women that don’t want to take a label, women who may have previously considered themselves straight, but are now in a relationship with a woman. This is something we’ve seen with the big growth in the ‘no label’ option of users in the app.”
The app is a social network for women who want to meet a woman for whatever reason. Her provides content and events that it hopes will better match people together in an effort to form friendships. The app also provides news relating to lesbian and queer women issues, or just simply fun pieces of information and memes.
Her is free to use, but Exton says the company will look at a premium version of the app in the future.
