GotIt! Education is expanding access to its AI-based math tutor MathGPT. It has launched an Essentials Version of the platform, making it free for all U.S. state and community colleges.
First launched by the on-demand micro-tutoring network in 2023, MathGPT is a multimodal platform that combines OpenAI’s ChatGPT model with interactive audio and video content.
“Too many schools can’t afford AI,” GotIt! Education Chairman Peter Relan said in a statement. “With MathGPT now free, schools can try AI-based tutors — but without a hit on already tight budgets. Our free MathGPT Essentials program also enables schools to switch from poorly functioning AI tutors that are actually slowing adoption of AI technology in education.”
The new MathGPT Essentials Version includes three components:
- Course management capabilities whereby instructors can create customized courses using educational content that’s automatically guardrailed;
- Assignment management allows the automatic creation and grading of assignments and
- Grounded AI tutor which provides personalized — and patient — AI instruction with student input evaluation and correction for each step
GotIt! Education says 30 college classrooms throughout the U.S. adopted MathGPT during the 2024 winter term, claiming students completed more than 10,000 AI tutoring sessions (150,000 minutes). The company said that its AI “did not provide students with an answer directly” but did “step-by-step tutoring including asking for and evaluating student attempts at each step accurately, with no mistakes,” and there were no hallucinations.

The broader availability of MathGPT comes as more academic institutions debate how to address AI in the classroom. Some teachers use ChatGPT to help grade essays, but the practice raises ethical concerns. Universities are also slowly accepting students’ use of it. Making MathGPT free at all state and community colleges can help those struggling financially and academically, as well as those unable to find support.
Colleges and classrooms looking to use MathGPT can apply for access to the Essentials Version. GotIt! says onboarding for Fall 2024 will be on a first-come-first-served basis. Instructors, administrators and department heads must submit their course type, content source, the number of classrooms and student count.
For those wanting additional features, there’s MathGPT Advanced, which includes everything from MathGPT Essentials, personalized AI tutoring for all assignment problems and built-in Remedial Algebra course content and tutoring. However, this plan is not free — it costs $25 per student per course.
